La Merced

By the time I opened my eyes again, I could see a large banner stretching across the road in front of us bearing the words “Bienviendos a La Merced,” or “Welcome to La Merced.” As we entered the city, I was surprised by all of the activity in the streets. Every time that I had heard about la selva (the jungle), I had had pictured some remote landscape with only a few people and not much happening. I wasn’t expecting to see all the cars, moto-taxis and people milling about in the dark and drizzly evening. The car dropped us off at the center of town. Luckily, I was feeling much better by this time and I had the strength to hoist my backpack carrying my cameras, my laptop, and other equipment over my shoulders. Dan and I walked across the square and down a side street to the hotel where we were staying. Soon after we checked in and dropped off our bags, Jose Jorge picked us up and brought us to Chanchamayo Highland Coffee.
